Cave Creek

Cave Creek is a delightful suburb of the Greater Phoenix area that overflows with character. This is a place where the cowboy lifestyle blends with modernity as it has been able to preserve the vibe of a frontier town. Seeing horses parked next to motorcycles outside a saloon is a common occurrence to this day.

Cave Creek is situated roughly 32 miles north of Downtown Phoenix. It is flanked by the lovely rural community of Desert Hills to the west and its sister town, Carefree to the east.

Although Cave Creek was only officially incorporated as a town in 1986, its creation dates back to Arizona’s earliest days.

In 1870, shortly after the creation of the Arizona Territory, commanding officer Major General George S. Stoneman and his troops found a flourishing riparian zone while scouting for alternative trade routes. Because of the sparkling creek and an eroded cave located along its banks, the area was called “Cave Creek.”

Prospectors digging for gold soon swarmed the area, drawing more people to it. By 1877, Cave Creek Station was established with the addition of an adobe lodge that welcomed hungry and exhausted travelers. Mining would soon be replaced by cattle farming as the area’s main economic driver. This would eventually lead to the growth of one of the most charming and desirable locales in the Valley of the Sun.

Much of this rich history is preserved in the town’s very own museum.
